Paleo Diet – Reasons For Feeling Tired – Part 2

In the previous article I showed you the first few reasons why it is you may be feeling tired when you decide to change over to following a Paleo diet. In this one we look at some more and then in another article to be posted to this site I will provide advice on how to combat this situation.

Reason 4 – You Aren’t Eating Enough Fat

As we all know when it comes to getting energy from food, then carbs are important. But what you may not realise is that fat is important as well. The main reason why so many people fail to consume enough calories is down to the fact that they are scared of eating too much fat. As a result of this the foods that contain lots of carbs in them are eliminated from their diet and of course they won’t eat any healthy fats in their place. It is for this reason you may find yourself feeling not only tired all the time, but hungry as well.

What you need to remember is that there isn’t any reason for you to be “scared of including fat in your diet”. There isn’t anything as a “low fat Paleo diet”. In fact the term “low fat” is something that you need not include in your vocabulary.

Coconut Oil

It is perfectly acceptable for you to eat plenty of butter, animal fats as well as fatty cuts of meat as these are all good for you. However there is one particular fat you will find that will help to keep up your energy levels and that is “coconut oil”. This oil contains a special form of saturated fat known as MCT (medium chain triglyceride). Unlike some other forms of saturated fat this one found in coconut oil is digested and absorbed by our bodies much faster, providing you with an instant boost of energy.

The next time you are feeling a little run down and want an energy boost, have a spoonful of coconut oil rather than looking for what you need from caffeine or a snack containing sugar. The oil will provide you with a boost of energy but without the crash afterwards.

Reason 5 – You Aren’t Including Enough Salt In Your Diet

This like not getting enough fat or calories seems to be something that only those following a Paleo diet seem to suffer from. We are often being told that salt isn’t only unhealthy but also dangerous. This simply isn’t the case. In fact not including enough salt in your diet can prove just as unhealthy as eating too much.

When following a Paleo diet it is very easy to not get enough salt in your diet especially because you have chosen to eliminate processed food from your diet which contains high levels of salt in it. Plus of course you are now choosing to not cook with salt anymore.

The problem you are faced with when restricting the amount of salt you include in your diet is that you are reducing the amount of iodine your body receives. Although iodine isn’t actually found naturally in salt, most table salts you purchase have been fortified with it. You need to make sure that you are getting enough iodine as this helps to keep your thyroid healthy. If your thyroid isn’t healthy it cannot function properly and it needs to in order to help control hormone production in your body.

However it isn’t only the iodine found in salt that helps to prevent you from feeling it is also an electrolyte. This is one of the most important minerals our bodies need in order to help it function correctly, especially after we have been exercising. If you aren’t including enough salt in your diet the risk of developing a condition known, as “hyponatremia” is high. This leads to you not only feeling tired but suffering from muscle cramps and also feeling confused.

Reason 6 – You Aren’t Getting Enough Nutrients

Along with not getting enough iodine there are plenty of other nutrients that your body needs, which can prevent you from feeling, tired. The kinds of nutrients you may find you aren’t getting enough of are Iron, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Choline and Selenium. All of which help your body to function more effective.
